Exhaustion

A Poem by Lea Emmett

like a weighted blanket

stifling each breath.

It lays across my chest

and suffocates my motivation

as I negotiate with my will

to let me out of bed.

I win this battle.

But the tire will linger all day;

whispering lies that shut me down,

taunting me to passivity.

A candle burns in the corner.

It flickers before it dies.

The smell of cinnamon and smoke

wafts to my nose.

It’s almost eerie.

I prefer the smell of coffee

in the morning.

I shake off the slumber

and turn on the shower.

The sound of deluge on ceramic

brings cherished Jesus Culture

lyrics to my mind,

“Let is rain, let it rain,

open the floodgates of heaven.”

Wake me up, O Lord,

for these days are evil.

Still, you bring it to rest.
