A Psalm Called Remember

A Poem by Cheryl Carlos

Remember

when the road took you down into a valley

without trees or songs or hope?

Remember

when prayers never left your tongue,

and your soul was too broken to weep?

Remember

when the shadows made you ache,

and fear seemed to be your only companion?

Remember

when the only world you had left was darkness,

and no one held your hand?

Remember

when you heard your name across the emptiness,

how light finally came,

how grace finally came?

Remember how you finally knew

He was there all along?

Remember.

Once upon a time, Cheryl Carlos was a high school English teacher, a district consultant, and a college publications’ writer/editor. And while she will always be a teacher at heart, now she travels the world with her husband and two adult daughters. She calls North Georgia home, and her back porch the place to be for good books, warm conversation, blueberry muffins, and a scrap of poetry or two. You can find Cheryl on Instagram @ipad.cheryl, and from time to time on @lovedletters.
