Purple Clematis

A Poem by Rosa Gilbert
O to be like this purple clematis,
inching, growing, climbing up the garden trellis,
Skyward, upward, toward the beaming summer sun,
Violet petals reaching for heaven and all its life,
to burst open closest, nearest to the beaming light
Under a cloud of witnesses, she wishes to bloom—
O purple clematis, I pray, teach me to be like you.
