A Poem by Chelsea Fraser

“The smoking flax he shall not quench” — Isaiah 42:3

There is a flame inside of me

that waxes and wanes.

Its glow at times warms all around

or blazes brilliant flames.

And sometimes, under cover

it diminishes and smokes.

It longs for fuel, for oxygen,

reluctant to be coaxed.

But when my flames to embers

glow and weary, dim with doubt,

A Promise breathes upon me,

“I will never put you out.”
