Emergence

An Advent Poem by Alexis Ragan

Did it brighten the stable?

A bout of warmth filling the room?

Once dark, cold, and impersonal,

Now light being birthed from the womb.

This light, His light, actualized,

humanly formed, a babe, a bulb,

of illumination, emancipation,

this child meant freedom for all.

Did it spark a fire?

Not only in the manger but the hearts

of shepherds once strangers?

Each cry from the infant spreading rays

of promise, the “rising sun” they would call him,

The Light that would carry us home.
