My Leading Lantern

A Poem by Alexis Ragan

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” — Psalm 119:105

Where is there a place to go in the forest

of life’s middle space? The path

that all people follow but few stay

on despite the past? Only the brave

save oil in their lanterns,

for the darkest parts of the journey come

first before the First and the Last

leads them home. My leading lantern

is small and humble looking,

but when burning sufficiently,

a haven is created and the road looks lovely

enough to be in the rich woods of Narnia.

Sometimes, the flame flickers in my lamp,

but it never fails to be a guide, paving

a luminescent path back

to Christ, the ultimate Light—

through Him, you can see

the way to our everlasting road.
